While the emancipatory affect of social media is often over emphasized in a techno-populist fashion, the power diffusion to new communicators, new multipliers and a multipolar media economy is often neglected. In this workshop, we focus on the role of technology, power and actors of change together with Professor of Media, Communications and Social Theory Nick Couldry (London School of Economics) and the Assistant Professors of New Media and Digital Culture Thomas Poell (University of Amsterdam) and Mirko Tobias Schäfer, (Utrecht University/Data School).

About the Speakers
Nick Couldry, Professor of Media, Communications and Social Theory at London School of Economics, will discuss the issue of participatory governance, technology and symbolic power.
Thomas Poell is assistant professor of New Media and Digital Culture at the Department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam. He will discuss how public space is reconfigured in the new emerging ecosystem of social media and conventional mass media.
Mirko Tobias Schäfer is Assistant Professor for New Media & Digital Culture at the University of Utrecht and director of the Data School. He will introduce Joseph Nye Jr.’s notion of power diffusion and reflect on its impact on public spheres.15 MAY 2014
