Funda Ustek-Spilda: Fairwork by design
Hosted by the special interest group Principles by design (Governing the Digital Society), Utrecht University in the Netherlands.
What are the principles of fair work in the gig economy and how can these be implemented at the startup and development stage of a platform? These are the two central questions of my talk, where I will introduce the five principles of fair work and discuss how software, hardware, data and network systems need to all incorporate these principles by design for a fair platform economy to become an actual reality. With examples from platform design in both geographically-tethered gig work and cloudwork (including operational, business, interface and data), I will introduce potential pathways to change, as well as the systems that are particularly exploitative.
Funda Ustek-Spilda is a post-doctoral researcher and project manager at Fairwork Foundation, based at Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford. Before joining Fairwork, she held post-doc positions in London School of Economics (2018-2020) and Goldsmiths, University of London (2014-2018); studying the intersection of labour, gender, migration and data, with a focus on ethics, social justice and responsibility. She holds a DPhil in Sociology from the University of Oxford (2015).
