Workshop: Ethics and Big Data in Public Management

Data School was invited by the City of Utrecht to host two workshops on ethics and big data at the /C4 CIO Congress/ “Smart Cities, Happy Citizens”. The event is a summit for the senior civil servants and policy makers in the field of information management and processing. The workshop provided an introduction to the various challenges one encounters in working with data sets. Drawing from earlier research at the Data School, Gerwin van Schie and Mirko Tobias Schäfer discussed what pitfalls the general public assigns to big data and what problems are found by practitioners working with big data. Mapping the range of challenges on a matrix allowed them to discuss the various issues with the participants.
