Irene Westra wins Peter G. Swanborn award

Irene Westra, executive secretary at Data School, has been awarded the prestigious Peter G. Swanborn award for her BA thesis in sociology. Together with her co-author Elmira van den Broek, Irene investigated the impact of institutions on the organizational performance of open source communities. In their meticulously researched paper ‘The influence of institutions on organizational performance via network structure. Regarding the institutional context of the Open Source community’ the authors combine theories on institutions and social networks with an analysis of performance indicators of the open source community. The jury concludes that this paper indicates an outstanding knowledge of sociological theories on institutions and social networks reaching beyond the limits of the discipline with skilful data analysis.
